FAQs about ankle pain relief
How to treat a painful ankle?
Treatment for ankle pain should be made on an individual basis depending on the type and severity of the injury. Some general guidelines include:
- In the very initial stages of an injury, the first eight hours, ice or cryotherapy can be used for pain relief and bleeding control. However, after this time it could interrupt the healing process.
- While rest in the first few days helps your body to repair, it’s also important to continue to mobilize the joint with moderate movement if it is not painful to do so.
- Some doctors recommend compressing an injury with a bandage, this can help in cases where there is a lot of swelling or bleeding. However, it is important not to wrap any bandages too tightly.
- Elevation is also recommended by some doctors to help drain swelling and slow blood flow to the injured area.1
- Icy Hot® can be used to help relax muscles* and soothe joint pain.
*Refers to cooling and warming sensations.
What causes ankle pain?
Sports injuries, including sprains and fractures, are a common cause of ankle pain. It can also be caused by a pinched nerve or other underlying medical conditions.2
When to see a doctor for ankle pain?
You should see a doctor for ankle pain if you are experiencing severe pain or pain that means you cannot carry out your normal daily activities. Go to the emergency room if you have had an accident or fall, can’t move your ankle or leg, or suspect a broken bone.2 If you’re using over-the-counter medications and your condition worsens or symptoms persist for more than 7 days, or if symptoms clear up and occur again within a few days, seek advice from a doctor.
What to do if my ankle hurts?
If you are experiencing ankle pain that isn’t severe or interfering with your normal daily activities, you can use over-the-counter pain killers. Try to keep mobilizing the joint without applying too much pressure.1 Icy Hot® Original uses cooling and warming sensations to help soothe joint pain.
