FAQs about ice and heat therapy
How does ice and heat therapy work?
Ice and heat therapy is used to help the body recover from injuries. Initially, ice is used to reduce blood flow and swelling to the area. After swelling has subsided, normally within 72 hours, heat treatment is used to encourage blood flow and promote healing. Icy Hot® Ice + Heat Therapy* is inspired by ice and heat therapy methods, providing an over-the-counter solution that uses cooling and warming sensations to relieve muscle and joint pain.
How to apply ice and heat therapy?
The most common way to use ice therapy is by using an ice pack. You can buy purpose-made ice packs or make your own at home using a bag of ice, or frozen peas. Never apply ice directly to skin, wrap your ice pack in a cloth or tea towel to prevent injuring the skin.
Heat therapy can be applied using methods including a hot bath, a hot water bottle. Icy Hot® Ice + Heat Therapy* delivers a dual-action treatment that provides a cooling sensation first to numb pain, followed by a warming sensation to relax tired muscles.
What is the difference between ice and heat therapy?
Ice and heat therapy have opposite effects: Ice reduces blood flow, which is helpful in the early stages of an injury to reduce swelling. On the other hand, heat encourages blood flow, which is helpful to support the healing process.
Is it better to use both ice and heat?
The most important consideration is when to use ice and when to use heat. For the first few days after an injury, only ice should be used. Heat can be used later on to help the injury to heal.
When should I use ice and heat therapy?
Ice and heat therapy may be effective treatment methods for injuries, including sports injuries, sprains and strains. It can also be used to help treat the symptoms of ongoing conditions like arthritis and joint inflammation.
How to use ice and heat therapy for back pain?
Ice therapy can help reduce swelling in the back, while heat therapy can help by increasing blood flow to the affected area.
Does ice and heat reduce swelling?
Ice therapy is an effective method for reducing swelling. It may be used after an injury occurs. Heat therapy does not reduce swelling and shouldn’t be used until initial swelling has subsided.
